The Divorce Party by Laura Dave
Earlier this month, my book club met to discuss The Divorce Party by Laura Dave. Laura Dave joined us as she grew up with my friend Adar Gurvitch.
The book is about how a couple married for 35 years decides to separate and thow a divorce party and how their family reacts to the idea that their family is changing. With emotional candor and surprising humor, Laura shows her characters trying to answer questions like, can you ever really know someone or when should you fight for the person you love most, and when should you begin to let him go?
The book was great, but after meeting Laura and learning how she approached her stories, I enjoyed it even more. Jennifer Aniston's production company has purchased the rights, so I suggest reading it before it hits the theaters.
Pass it on

A Note from Beth
Hello!
I can't believe it’s already August! Where has the summer gone? In a few weeks, school will start and colleagues who were taking it "easy" this summer will be back to work.
For me, I can't recall a busier summer. I have been working with some amazing businesses and non-profit organizations, all while getting my son, Miles, ready for his first day of pre-school. For more than a decade, my back-to-school season has started in June as that is when many of my clients begin to ship their products. It's kind of fun seeing back-to-school from this new perspective.
In this tumultuous business climate, we rarely hear about people’s success. This month, I decided The Target Advocate should have a summer vacation theme of its own and focus on some of the great things people I know have accomplished.
In addition, Dr. Paul Branch is our Featured Network Partner, as if it were not for networkng, I would still have an annoying cough.
Enjoy the rest of your summer!
Beth
107 Ways to Leverage Your Small Business through Marketing & Public Relations
After three years of writing and research, I published an important new tip booklet. 107 Ways to Leverge Your Small Business Through Marketing & Public Relations is a direct result of my experiences working with small business owners.
This booklet gives you bite-sized suggestions for planning and implementing your marketing strategy. Like many business owners, you may be doing the daily balancing act of reviewing the big picture while also handling those crucial details such as effectively describing what your firm does. It can be easy to lose track of maintaining your presence out in the world. If you would like to read more, or order your own copy, click here.
Featured Network Partner: Dr. Paul Branch
If you know me, I have been trying to get rid of a horrible chronic cough for the past five years. Well, after less than four months my cough is GONE, all thanks to Dr. Paul Branch.
Orginally, I met Paul through a networking referral by Rachel Hersh at Prestigle Capital Corporation. Paul was looking for marketing support for his classical homeopathy practice. I had never considered homeopathy to help my cough, but during our talk, Paul explained homeopathy to me: How it works, the types of illnesses he treats, and how he determines the proper treatment through his patient map
. This map is basically a strategic plan of a person and their illnesses. In one example of the types of conditions Paul works on, he told me about a patient who was suffering from kidney stones. He prescribed a remedy made with diamonds. As a strategist, I thought the map was amazing and may give some insight to my cough. Three days later, I was in his office and almost four months later, my cough is basically gone. It's amazing. To learn more about Paul and his services, check out his site at homeopathicdoc.com or email him directly.
Early Start Child Books
If you have kids, you are always on the hunt for new books to read so you must check out these books from the Early Start Child collection. Each page has a parent idea or tip that helps reinforce the theme of each page. It's a proven teaching strategy and what I love is that Miles is actually involved in "reading" the book. He wants to take them everywhere. They're available on Amazon.com and will be in a children's store near you very soon.
Have seen seen East 14th? If not, run don't walk!
East 14th is a hilarious Off-Broadway comedy written, directed and performed by Don Reed. A colleague from Los Angeles is co-producing the show with Don and it’s been getting rave reviews. It's about Don's life living on East 14th Street in Oakland, California.
THE NEW YORKER said, "All hard childhoods have their funny moments, but few such childhoods are hilarious. Yet the audience can't stop laughing as Don Reed, in his one-man show, acts out the story of his dicey coming-of-age in an Oakland ghetto in the nineteen-seventies. Reed plays all the characters-his father, a hard-partying pimp; his stepfather, an abusive religious fanatic; his flamboyantly gay brother; and all manner of women, including his lost, sad mother-with both ease and inexhaustible energy. It's hard to imagine that the awkward kid who came up through such crude circumstances could be the confident man who wrote, directed, and stars in this little play, as much standup as it is theatre, and yet that's Reed's point: that East 14th was not just a street in Oakland but a path that formed a decent man.”
I saw it last week and LOVED IT! To see the show, call New World Stages, 340 W. 50th St. at 212-239-6200 or ticketmaster.com. The show is only running until September.
Skidders
If Miles' was a bit younger, I would be using Skidders. The outsole is rubber so the child can have better traction when learning to stand and walk. The upper material is a breathable knit. It is lightweight, machine washable and comes in a variety of designs that can match with any outfit. The best feature is that it can be used indoors and outdoors. Check out myskidders.com .
