Monday May 30, 2011Social Media Tips - June 2011
Social media continues to grow and influence the way we work, network, connect, relax, and share information. This month, we want to share our observations on social media fundraising.
Recently, I was involved with an organization's first-time social media fundraising effort/challenge. The organization was my kids' school which had received a challenge from a foundation to get 1,000 donors to donate $18 each by the end of a three week period. They would match the organization $18,000 if we met their goal. We did it!
Over the three weeks of this challenge, I came to several conclusions, which I share in the list below.
Happy Memorial Day, and I hope you have a great summer.

Fundraising via Social Media
1. Your fundraising potential is only as good as your list/network.
2. Social influence is key. Having several team players with influence will bring in money and will bring it in quickly.
3. In a short campaign, it is best to launch with a few donors "in the bag" and willing to donate during the first hour of the campaign. This will help create buzz, and confirm that it is a cause that people are interested in supporting.
4. Creation of buzz early on is important to get the campaign off the ground and for keeping the momentum going.
5. Disseminate information through several channels: blog, facebook, twitter, LinkedIn, and eNewsletters/email. You reach different audiences with each, there may be some overlap, but not always.
6. Have someone "on the ground" at live events to guide possible donors through the donation process, particularly if it is online.process. Some people are afraid or unwilling to go through the donation process online. We had several people ask us to do the typing for them! These people would not have given otherwise.
7. As always, the magic is still in the mix. While social media is an excellent opportunity to get your message out to your networks, it works best if you have a personal connection to these networks, and have some face time with these connections.
